The historic HK-1 Spruce Goose was designed by Howard Hughes to fill a United States Navy requirement for a long range transport seaplane capable of operating in support of US Navy and Marine forces in the far-reaching Pacific. Later designated the H-4, the aircraft was finished too late for service in WWII. Its first and only flight proved the airplane to be air-worthy.
