Description
You will get one of the Yooperlite Sphere similar to the one in the listing, the size and the color of the sphere may slightly vary as well due to the fact that all minerals are different. (see photo, the photos are taken under bright light, stand NOT included)! Average 1pc Diameter 16mm / 5/8 Inches; Average 1pc Weight 6g / 0.2oz; Photos under LW & SW UV light were taken with using powerful 10w flashligh and 6w lamp with optical UV filter! Gem dealer Erik Rintamaki first discovered Yooperlite rocks on the beaches of Lake Superior that seemed to glow as though they were molten. Researchers from Michigan Tech University and the University of Saskatchewan managed to figure out why they fluoresce: they contain syenite clasts wich containing fluorescent sodalite, an intrusive magmatic rock, which glows when exposed to UV light. Testing completed at Michigan Technological University confirmed that yooperlites contained sodium, alumina, silicon, chlorine and oxygen but not structural sulfur. Yooperlite or Sodalite-Syenite is a foid-syenite where sodalite is the most abundant foid. One type of foid-syenitic-rock is nepheline syenite pegmatite which can include minerals such as - sodalite, microcline, olivine, chlorine, pyroxene, biotite, titanite, iron oxides, apatite, fluorite, melanite garnet, and zircon. Nepheline is a feldspathoid, a solid-solution mineral, that does not coexist with quartz. Nepheline syenites and phonolites occur, for example, in Brazil, Canada, Cameroon, China, Greenland, Italy, Norway, the Pyrenees, Sweden, the Transvaal region, the Ural Mountains, in the USA Magnet Cove igneous complex of Arkansas, the mountains of the Central Montana Alkali Province, and as well as on oceanic islands.
